Some 160 high school and vocational students from various institutes in Malaga attended a new edition, the third in the Andalusian capital, of the training day Bringing science to schools on Wednesday. Drug research and development. The objective? To inform young people about the research process of a medicine, and to do it from the triple perspective of clinicians and researchers, patients and the pharmaceutical industry.
The global vision of the meeting tries to show the complexity of the biomedicine research process and its collaborative condition, and thus seeks, in addition to explaining a very little known socially, to promote students’ interest in research.
Beyond the explanations of the speakers, the day promotes the participation of young attendees, so that they can deepen the different aspects presented, resolve their doubts and even provide their suggestions.
The coordinator of the Cardiovascular Diseases Area of ??Ibima, Manuel Jiménez; the researcher, the Medical Oncology Intercenter Unit of the Regional and Virgin Hospitals of the Victoria María Isabel Queipo, and the medical deputy director of the Regional Hospital, Miguel Ángel Ramírez.
The experience of the pharmaceutical industry was shared by Amelia Martín Uranga, coordinator of the Innovative Medicines Platform of Pharmaindustry, and the perspective of the patients was in charge of Francisca Muñoz, director of the Association of women operated on breast cancer in Malaga (Asamma ), and Lorena Soria, psychologist of the association.
The training day Bringing science to schools. Research and development of medicines is an initiative of Pharmaindustry that, in collaboration with different hospitals and research centers, has celebrated in the last three years different editions in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga.
In Distefar we see that it is necessary that education in adolescents covers topics such as the process of research of a medicine, making them participate in the complexity that this process entails in order to raise awareness
