This week, the Irish company ICON, which specialises in contract research organisation (CRO) services, announced a technology partnership with Microsoft as part of its strategy to increase investment in artificial intelligence over the next three years. The agreement involves the roll-out of Microsoft Copilot and its data infrastructure across the organisation, with the aim of strengthening ICON’s AI platform, Orbis.

According to the press release, this collaboration is aimed at accelerating the design of clinical trials, optimising operations, improving patient and research centre engagement, and strengthening decision-making across the company.

ICON states that this partnership will enable Microsoft’s Fabric and Azure data services to feed its Orbis platform with real-time, large-scale data, facilitating faster and higher-quality decision-making. Furthermore, the company plans to utilise Microsoft Copilot and Copilot Chat to automate repetitive, high-volume tasks, freeing up its staff to focus on activities with greater added value.

“The industry is adopting AI as a core infrastructure, and we are determined to be at the forefront of this transition towards the next generation of clinical trials”

ICON also plans to implement agents integrated into clinical trial workflows to accelerate the development of agent-based AI. “The industry is embracing AI as a core infrastructure, and we are determined to be at the forefront of this transition towards the next generation of clinical trials,” said Barry Balfe, CEO of ICON, in the statement.

“Our partnership with Microsoft is a significant step in our strategy to lead the CRO industry, as it provides us with productivity tools and a database to scale Orbis rapidly, enabling our teams to work smarter and more agilely, and deliver better outcomes for clients, sites and patients.”

Microsoft’s announcement came ahead of the release of its first-quarter results, which gave analysts at Evercore ISI a clearer picture of the company’s recovery. During that period, Microsoft recorded a solid volume of bookings, driven by an improvement in underlying demand. According to the analysts’ report, these new contracts provide greater visibility on the improvement in revenue performance and, in particular, on the potential return to organic revenue growth in 2027.

Before Balfe took up his post in October 2025, ICON had already experienced a slowdown in demand from major pharmaceutical companies, which led to redundancies. Earlier this year, the company withdrew its financial forecasts for 2025 and launched an internal investigation after detecting potential accounting errors in the previous year’s financial statements. Subsequently, in May, ICON completed this investigation and restated its consolidated financial statements for 2023 and 2024. As a result, it was concluded that revenue had been overestimated by 0.8 per cent in 2023 and by 1.1 per cent in 2024.
